Builds and maintains The Salon Tech Guide, comparing salon and spa software using official pricing pages and hands-on trial accounts where provider access allows.

If you’re comparing POS salon software, most reviews treat point-of-sale (POS) — the part of the software that handles checkout and payment — as a checkbox: does the platform have one, yes or no. But POS is where real money moves — every card swipe costs you a percentage, every terminal is a one-time hardware purchase, and those numbers vary a lot more between platforms than the “Built-in POS: Yes” checkmark suggests. This guide breaks down the actual cost of taking payments on six salon and spa platforms: hardware pricing, processing rates, and what changes depending on how you take the card.

All figures below are pulled directly from each provider’s official pricing or hardware pages as of July 2026. Where a platform doesn’t publish a fixed number — which turned out to matter more than you’d expect — we say so instead of estimating.

Hardware and processing rates change more often than software subscriptions. We’ll re-verify these figures periodically, but always confirm current rates on the provider’s own pricing page before budgeting — especially if you’re comparing quotes from older articles or forum posts.

Quick comparison: hardware and processing at a glance

Software Cheapest hardware In-person processing Software starting price
Square Appointments $59 (Reader) 2.6% + 15¢ (Free plan) Free
Vagaro Free with Merchant Services 2.75% (under $4K/mo volume) $23.99-30/mo
Booksy $53.10 + shipping 2.49% + $0.10 $29.99/mo
Mangomint $99 2.45% + 15¢ $165/mo
GlossGenius $49 2.6% flat $24/mo
Fresha From $139 2.29% + $0.20 + $0.10 tap auth $19.95/mo

Processing rates shown are each provider’s standard in-person rate on their lowest published tier. Higher software tiers sometimes unlock lower processing rates — noted per platform below.

How to calculate what POS salon software will actually cost you

The subscription price is the smallest piece of the real cost. Three things determine what you’ll actually pay each month:

  • Hardware (one-time): what you pay upfront for a reader or terminal — ranges from free to a few hundred dollars depending on the device.
  • Processing rate (ongoing, per transaction): the percentage plus flat fee taken from every card payment. This is the number that scales with your revenue, so it matters far more than the hardware cost once you’re a few months in.
  • Software subscription (ongoing, monthly): what you pay regardless of transaction volume.

A rough way to compare: take your average monthly card revenue and multiply by the processing rate, then add the monthly subscription. A salon doing $15,000/month in card sales on a 2.6% rate pays about $390/month in processing alone — more than most of these subscriptions cost outright. That’s why the processing rate deserves more attention than it usually gets in these comparisons.

Square Appointments

Square’s hardware lineup is the most transparent of the six, with fixed prices published directly on the product pages: Square Reader for contactless and chip at $59, Square Stand at $149, and Square Terminal at $299 (or $27/month over 12 months through financing). Processing runs 2.6% + 15¢ in-person on the Free plan, dropping slightly to 2.5% + 15¢ on the Plus plan ($49/month).

Worth knowing: Square’s free software tier makes the Reader ($59) the lowest total entry cost of any platform here if you’re starting from zero — no subscription, just the one-time hardware purchase and the per-transaction rate.

Vagaro

Vagaro’s card reader is free when you sign up for Vagaro Merchant Services — no separate purchase needed for the basic setup. For a countertop front-desk experience, the PayPro Mini (a tablet with a built-in payment processor) runs $370, or $0 upfront through Vagaro Capital, which deducts the cost as a percentage of daily card sales instead of a fixed monthly fee.

Processing is volume-tiered: small merchants processing under $4,000/month in card sales pay 2.75% per swipe with no monthly account fee, while merchants over that threshold pay 2.2% + 19¢ per swipe plus a $10/month account fee. For most single-location salons, the exact tier depends on monthly volume, so it’s worth checking which side of that $4,000 line your business falls on before assuming a rate. Booksy

Booksy’s official pricing page lists two hardware options: the Stripe Reader M2 at $53.10 plus shipping, or the BBPOS WisePOS E (a standalone terminal with its own screen) at $219.85 plus shipping. Processing rates differ by how the card is entered — 2.49% + $0.10 through the Booksy Card Reader, 2.49% + $0.20 for Tap to Pay, and 2.69% + $0.30 for mobile payments or keyed-in entries like charging a card on file. See our full Booksy review for how the rest of the platform compares.

Worth knowing: the gap between reader-present (2.49%) and keyed-in (2.69%) rates is wider here than on some competitors, so how you typically process payments — in person with the reader vs. charging saved cards for deposits and no-shows — affects your real blended rate more than the headline number suggests.

Mangomint

Mangomint’s own hardware store prices the Bluetooth card reader at $99, with an optional countertop dock at $29 and iPad stands running $118 (short) to $149 (tall) for a full front-desk display setup. Processing is a flat 2.45% + 15¢ regardless of software tier. Mangomint is also the only platform here where the software subscription itself starts well above the others — $165/month — so the hardware cost is a smaller fraction of the total first-year spend than it is on cheaper platforms.

GlossGenius

GlossGenius sells two reader tiers: a basic Bluetooth reader at $49 (available in several colors), or the Pro Reader — a standalone device with its own screen — at $299 (down from a previous $329 list price). Processing is a flat 2.6% on every transaction type, with no separate rate for tap, chip, swipe, or manual entry, which makes it one of the simplest rate structures to plan around.

Fresha

Fresha’s pricing page lists terminal devices starting from $139 — notably lower than the $499-500 figure that circulates on several third-party comparison sites, which appears to be outdated or based on an older device lineup. Processing is 2.29% + $0.20 in-person (plus a $0.10 authorization fee specifically for tap-to-pay transactions), or 2.79% + $0.20 for online payments.

Worth knowing: Fresha’s software subscription itself changed in 2025 — it’s no longer the fully free platform it’s sometimes still described as. Independent (one-person) accounts now start at $19.95/month, and Team accounts are $14.95/month per bookable team member. On top of that, a 20% one-time commission (minimum $6) applies to new clients who book through the Fresha marketplace specifically — it doesn’t apply to returning clients or anyone who books through your own website or socials.

Integrated POS vs. connecting your own processor

All six platforms here have payments built directly into the software — you’re not bolting on a separate POS system. The real decision isn’t “does it have POS,” it’s whether you’re locked into that platform’s processor or can shop rates elsewhere. Fresha, in particular, explicitly allows you to use the scheduling and booking software without using Fresha Payments — you can run bookings through Fresha and process cards through a different provider if you already have a merchant account elsewhere. The other five platforms tie processing to their own built-in system as the primary (and in most cases, only practical) option.

Frequently asked questions

Which salon POS has the lowest processing rate?

Fresha’s in-person rate of 2.29% + $0.20 is the lowest of the six compared here, followed by Mangomint at 2.45% + 15¢. The gap matters more at higher transaction volumes — on $20,000/month in card sales, the difference between Fresha’s rate and Square’s 2.6% adds up to a few hundred dollars a year.

Do I need to buy hardware, or can I use my phone?

Most of these platforms support Tap to Pay directly on a compatible phone (no reader purchase needed) for at least some transaction types, though rates for phone-based tap payments sometimes differ slightly from reader-based ones. Check each platform’s Tap to Pay availability and rate before assuming you can skip hardware entirely.

Can I negotiate a lower processing rate?

Several of these platforms (Square, Vagaro) publish custom or volume-based rates for businesses processing above a certain threshold — generally in the $250,000+/year range for Square, or the $4,000/month range for Vagaro’s tiered rate. If your salon is approaching that volume, it’s worth contacting the provider directly rather than assuming the published starter rate applies.

Why do some sources quote different hardware prices than this article?

Hardware and processing rates change more often than software subscription tiers, and many comparison sites don’t re-verify these numbers regularly. We pulled every figure in this guide directly from each provider’s official pricing or hardware page as of July 2026 rather than from aggregator sites, and found at least one meaningful discrepancy (Fresha’s terminal pricing) in the process — always check the provider’s own page before budgeting.
